Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

How in character are you? Empty How in character are you?

Post by Damon Ambrojze Sat May 21, 2011 7:41 pm

So I wanted to talk about how people RP. Where are you coming from when you RP your character?

According to one article I read recently, there are the type of people who are really focused on being completely in character and doing exactly what their character would do in a situation (intra-focused), and there are people who, while staying in character, choose from a matrix of options so as to make sure the story will always stay interesting (inter-focused).

I think which one I am varies depending on which character I play. For Angelique, I'd say I'm mostly intra-focused whereas for Caelani or Damon I'm way more inter-focused.

What about you?

Humm, let's say that me and Miseria are now two different personalities. I mean that when I joined this site, she was almost like my alterego. All black, gothic, blue hair (yes, I had blue hair, too), she was mainly depressed (I'm 23/6 miserable, don't ask why) and so on and on. Now, when I changed her PB, let's say that her characteristics have changed, too. But despite those little facts, i still think that my character is Both. Inter-, and intra-focused. I always do what I'd do, even in a fight (yes, even i have been fighting like in movies on a street [mostly to protect someone], and I've been lucky enough not to end up in hospital, he he), and I also try to make the "story" look interesting, although, it's a little complicated for me. My characters aren't like me, they're characters, the way an actor develops a character. Not to say I don't use my personality at times to fill the gaps. Jack and I share a soul, yet I don't know that we are alike, or that we'd even get along. I make sure that my characters and I are NOT the same person.

Jack is mostly inter focused. I can't make her doing something for the sake of what I or the readers want, or what'd be best. I lose myself and step into her shoes and I lose control of what I'm writing. I do manage to edit some stuff, just because I can't godmode or screw up plots, but it's hard to censor her.

While the others are typically the same, I don't have that same connection. I can force them to do something out of character if necessary, but I don't like to.

Hmm, well most of my characters are like what I would want to be or how I once acted. But the character that is mostly like me is definately Hitame.

Hitam'es tough for some things, but then there are times when she just breaks down and she just cries or she does something to help her. That's just like me. Some of her talents are based on mine, like her singing. She's a singer just like I am, and both our drawing skills are basically Horrible, with a capital eww Smile

I try to act the way my characters act, but there is just so many more things I have in common with Hitame. She's like my other half, I guess you could say.

I would say I am mostly intra-focused with Amelia. I created her with a very specific personality, and it can sometimes be restrictive in the inter-focused sense. For example, Amelia wouldn't really just walk up to someone and talk to them at a party. Therefore, large plot threads (Yule Ball and the like) usually end up being threads within threads for my character, because she really only talks to a few people there.

Also, I really like Amelia's character because I feel like she is unique. Although there are other characters on the site that are introverted, I like that Amelia has a few character ticks to set her apart. She is really easily embarrassed, has a bit of a temper, and frequently argues with her subconscious. So I tend to choose intra-focused roleplay options because I like staying true to Amelia's character.

With Remy, I am more up for being inter-focused. She could serve as a plot point, though she has yet to do so in any major capacity.

Maybe i can explain this better since i was thinking alot about it as i tried to go to sleep last night.. I was up untill like midnight..

Have you all seen the movie Nimi's Island? there is the female writer Alex Rover who writes adventure novles about a guy named Alex Rover. well she is completly diverent thand the explore/adventurest Alex rover but he is like alway there. she see's him and talks to him though other people just read about him, and think he is her.

I don't see my characters just standing there but i hear them talking and i will reply most of the time. and they all have atleast one of two things about them that are like me. i wouln't go into listing them though..

Betta is definitely intra-focused. Whatever she does is what I'd do given a particular situation.
