Jack opens the door, then pulled a large, ugly, silver knob, which pulled the snuffers off the lamps; the lamps promptly flickered into life. He dumped his briefcase on the desk, unlocked the scales cupboard and started writing on the blackboard.

ARITHMANCY - Black Boxes and Arithmancy

Black boxes have been a universal method of abstraction of many years. Black boxes work like this:

You can create a black box in arithmancy using the (define ... ) utility. A sample (define ) is given below.

Code:: (define (square x) (* x x))

(define defines a black box. (square x) means for the black box called "square", an expression identified as "x" should be passed. And finally (* x x) means multiply the expression "x" by itself, as per normal arithmancy rules. Don't forget to close parenthesis! And to use the black box we've just created, we simply call it like so:

Code:: (square 5)

Which will return 25, the square of 5.

Jack walked over to a different cabinet and pulled out some black boxes. "You write what it's called here," he said. pointing at a little white mark, "then you use it like you would an addition or subtraction or whatever else you want to do."
