A Sunny Spot to Study Empty A Sunny Spot to Study

Post by Amelia Lyons Fri Apr 02, 2010 11:11 pm

It was a giggling group of third year girls who had exiled Amelia from the library, albeit by her own accord, but if it weren’t for them she could have been comfortably sitting at her usual table in the History of Magic section. Amelia explicitly chose that section of the library because it was deserted. Apparently, these girls had chosen that section for the same reason, though it was obvious from the first time they entered Amelia’s line of vision that they had no intention of studying. No, they had chosen this spot so they could gossip about some boy that was the crush of some girl and other such nonsense.

Usually, it would have been easy to remove herself from this situation to another part of the library, but with midterm exam panic settling over Hogwarts, the library was packed. Amelia hadn’t been able to find a quiet area anywhere, and thus she had taken her enormous stack of books and parchment to find a more deserted and decidedly quieter environment in which to study.

After failed attempts at the Ravenclaw common room, the study room, and even the Room of Requirement, Amelia found herself making her way down to the Great Hall. But when she opened the doors, she realized that it must be a meal time, because the entire placed was packed and abuzz. In the hecticness of her day, Amelia hadn’t even realized she was hungry or that it was dinner time, and it was with a sigh that she let the door close once more, not even motivated to eat by knowing that it was time she did.

As the door shut with a thud Amelia turned on the spot. She was out of ideas, but after a moment of surveying her surroundings, she found that the entrance hall was blessedly deserted. It wouldn’t have been her first choice, but it seemed she was out of options, so she crossed the threshold to a windowsill that was illuminated by the light of the sun, which was making its way back toward the horizon. The sill was deep and long enough that she could sit in it, and she did just that, leaning her back against one side and bending her knees up to make a quasi-table on which she rested her Transfiguration textbook, flipping to the section on cross-species transfiguration and beginning to review for the exam coming up.

A Sunny Spot to Study Empty Re: A Sunny Spot to Study

Spring had started some ten days ago though that could only be visible right on this sunny day. Grass around the Hogwarts castle was so green that you would need sunglasses to look at it without loosing your sight for complete. Wind was blowing and alot of students were out either playing like little kids or reading the book in the shadow of the forbidden forest. Truth is whatever they were doing was always followed by a big amount of noise. Boys were chasing girls and girls were screaming like girls running around the lake like who was chasing them was someone who was going to kill them not hit them with a water ball. Normally Derek would enjoy these little naughty screamings, but there was something different about this day.

And though he did enjoy listening to them he was searching for some peace and quite for the change. Not the complete quiet naturally. Having a guitar in his hand and quite didn't go together. It was just a feeling that he had wanting to play alone for the change. Wind was blowing through his disorganized hair as he was slowly starting to get away from the crowd of students that were either listening to him or chasing around the lake.

Day made himself too unique that Derek could hardly resist the temptation of being alone. Sun and wind were like his own personal golden combination. He would eventually stop by the forbidden forest or by the lake where he would find the silence he was searching for though in the time of five minutes someone would appear screaming or trying to play a prank on him. He was sick of it.His patience was at the very last limit while he was trying not to explode. "Will you leave me alone!!??" he yelled at the little first year girl who was trying to hug him.

As the girl left he listened to more and more voices approaching so he decided to move from there and find himself a better entertainment. There was no room anywhere untill he arrived at the stairs by the entrance in the castle. They didn't look too bad and he could sit there and play the whole day if he wanted. Not paying much of attention he just sat at one of the lowest stairs and sighed starting to play instrumental. His voice was still a bit without a breath from when he yelled at the girl though his music rang through the entrance hall and some more closer surroundings. But fortunatly no one was there or at least he thought so...

A Sunny Spot to Study Empty Re: A Sunny Spot to Study

Amelia was deeply invested in her reading, as she usually was when books were involved, and thus she was mostly oblivious to the few students passing through the entrance way on their way to the dining hall or outdoors. The redhead was quite accustomed to staying inside when others were keen on getting some fresh air; quidditch games were a perfect example of an event which brought most of the castle outside, leaving the library blessedly deserted for Amelia to study. There were a few rowdy first years that put a small dent into her mental block of the world, but they passed quickly and thus did not draw her from her reverie.

And so she remained mostly oblivious to the world, lost in her studying until the sound of guitar chords penetrated her mind. If it has been voices or footfalls, Amelia would likely have been able to block the noise out, but her mental barriers were not impervious to music; they never were. If there was one thing that made it past Amelia’s defenses – both mental and emotional – it was music, and it was the first bars of an unknown song that lifted her eyes from the page. The entrance hall being as deserted as it was, it wasn’t difficult to discern from where the music had come.

There was a boy sitting at the base of the steps which led to the Great Hall, his dark hair falling over his eyes as he leaned over the neck of his guitar. He looked to be much younger than her, but it was difficult to tell without getting a good look at his face or being able to gage his age from his height. His music was not offensive, in fact he was rather good considering he looked to be so young, but Amelia still wasn’t overly pleased to have her silence interrupted in the last place left to study in peace.

Why, why, why can’t I ever be alone? she wondered mentally, shaking her head lightly in a why me? sort of way.

She continued to stare at him for a few minutes while he futzed with a few chords on the guitar, hoping that he would look up and notice her and take the hint her pointed stare was giving, but he didn’t seem to feel her eyes on him. If he did, he didn’t much care, as he just went on playing. Knowing she would have to take more initiative, Amelia cleared her throat quietly, hoping to draw his attention. It took two more of these interjections, each progressively louder, before Amelia believed it would be impossible that he had not heard her.

“Ah- hem,” Amelia cleared loudly for the fourth time, tapping her fingers on the open page of her book, which only added to her pointed interruption of the boy’s not-so-private performance.

A Sunny Spot to Study Empty Re: A Sunny Spot to Study

Derek had finally found a peaceful spot for his music playing. On his family holidays at France he didn't usually have to hide since they all sat and listened to his and Monet's performances aplauding which was a ear breaking aplause since his family was big and consisted of at least 15 members. Cousins, Uncles, Aunts, His Sister and His Mother. Though his mother used to be shortly there only for 3 weeks or so since she was too busy in her career world and hardly had time for anything else.

And again she was too buried in her own world to concern about what happened to him and his little sister which she hardly ever saw. There was a lot of news in the Daily Prophet about her going crazy though each time they would state the same with she did a million things. Did she go crazy? His guitar was ringing through the empty entrance hall or at least what he thought was an empty entrance hall. Once he got lost in his world it was rather difficult to snap him out of it.

Everytime i think i am closer to the heart
What it means to know just who i am
I think i finally found a better place to start
But no one ever seems to understand
I need to try to get to where you are
Could it be you're not that far?

Even though he didn't sing that loud that he couldn't hear movement in the entrance hall he was too lost in his world to notice anyone was actually disturbed by his music. People liked listening to him though there was probably some exceptions from the theory. Even though he haven't noticed it there was a girl reading more lower by the entrance in the castle. It was hard to notice someone he couldn't actually see.

After the girl made herself clear for the fourth time he had finally heard someone was actually there trying to get his attention. He placed his guitar on his side to approach and see what was going on. Not used to people interupting him. He scanned the girl he saw concluding she was in his house since robes she was using were same coloured as his. "Can i help you?" he asked not showing any particular intrest or impression towards the girl. She was definetly older then him though he couldn't say how much.

His appearance was such that people could give him good fifteen years if they saw him for the first time. But he was still only twelve just looking too old for his actual age. He stood there waiting for the girl to catch her attention.

A Sunny Spot to Study Empty Re: A Sunny Spot to Study

Despite her attempts to be noticed – usually she was doing just the opposite – Amelia’s struggles to be heard went unheeded for several bars of music and lines of lyrics. The boy was talented, that much was apparent from what little she had heard, but Amelia wasn’t in the mood for music at the moment. She had too much to get done, and she had already been ousted from the library and was out of options of places to relocate herself.

It was only after her fourth attempt that she managed to get the attention of the dark-haired boy, who finally ceased his strumming nad set his guitar aside. He rose from the steps, leaving the instrument behind, and approached her without hesitation. The look on his face and his bold approach suggested that he didn’t know who she was, or at least hadn’t associated her face with the rumors he might have heard. Most of the younger students – and plenty her own age as well – avoided Amelia, both because she had made it quite clear that she liked being alone, and because she didn’t have the abundance of people skills necessary to make and maintain friendships.

The boy’s quick overview of her did not go unnoticed, and Amelia did not hesitate to return the glance. Now that he was standing, Amelia could see that he was taller than she had anticipated, with a clearly defined, but still boyish jawline. He looked to be anywhere from 12-15 years old; Amelia wasn’t quite sure, and in all honestly, it didn’t make much different at the moment so she didn’t dwell on it. Instead, she got right to the point, as was just about the only way she dealt with things.

“Well that would depend on how attached you are to your current stage,” Amelia said pointedly, jutting her chin toward the steps where the boy had been sitting only a minute earlier, “You see, it was rather quiet here before you arrived, which is an environment rather more conducive to studying, if you see what I mean,” Amelia added, lifting up her transfiguration book as evidence to the fact that she had been doing just that before she was interrupted.

A Sunny Spot to Study Empty Re: A Sunny Spot to Study

It was obvious that not notcing someone who wanted to talk to him was quite rude from Derek's side even though he had a perfect explenation for his lame actions. People liked to listen to him since it made them relax from everyday problems and he had never found someone who would get annoyed by it. Maybe that's why he stopped being careful where he singed, when he singed or who was there where he sang. One of bad costums he should get rid of since to make friends he would need to be more polite and curteous.

Tall girl with sharp eyes who sat nearby seemed to be one of the rare exceptions that got annoyed at the hearing of music. There was no point of running away or doing anything else since Derek wasn't afreid of anyone at this age. That was one of his terrible weaknesses that would eventually get him to trouble. Even though subconciously the only reason why he started to sing was because he felt alone after his mother stopped caring about everything and everyone for some reason he wasn't able to explain to himself.

In Derek's mind his father was always the guilty link for everything that happened. Why did he die why did he leave them? Those questions kept rounding in his head all the time without him being able to control it. Regarding to the girl he just observed her looking at the sharp eyes that looked like they were going to slice him right there and right now. Distance was kept for the safety cause though he was already close enough to the girl.

"I'm sorry i don't think i know what you mean?" Derek finally asked since his sense of getting the point of out of coded sentences wasn't still at too advanced level. After all he was only 12. "Well i can say in my defence to do the same thing outside, but people kept coming and a girl kept chasing me like i was her boyfriend. Still i am sorry if i interupted you..." he said sititng on the stair still not close to the girl yet. His tongue felt rather heavy like he wasn't yet sure what to say.
